About Me

About Me

I’m a mom. An Arts+Culture nerd. A self-development junkie. A meditation and green smoothie enthusiast. I have a word fetish.

I was born and raised in Ecuador, South America. An early love of reading English literature in the original language and for listening to music with a dictionary in hand in order to understand the lyrics, became the obsession with words that I now call my career.

I lived in the Baltimore/DC area for over 10 years, working in Human Resources and Client Support for a company with a large Hispanic workforce, which required me to perform all duties both in English and Spanish. I also had the opportunity to volunteer as an interpreter for entities such as the American Red Cross, University of Maryland Medical Systems, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, and at our local Church. In every situation I was confronted with the severe lack of cultural context in the translated material that was available. So much was lost in translation, sometimes in a humorous way, like a 401(k) info booklet that had translated the word “match” as in contributions, to “match” as in matches to light a fire. But sometimes it was in a very dangerous way, like mis-translated patient care instructions for social workers. Every time, communication was rendered unclear and ineffective, even though the translation was “correct”, in the literal sense of the word.

The experiences mentioned above led me to realize the critical need for accessible and fully bilingual services from a professional who understands not only the literal words, but the wider context and immense cultural baggage behind those words. The cultural nuances truly shape and inform communication, and it is a crucial, but often overlooked aspect when performing translations. I started The Spanish Accent with one goal in mind, that my clients will never get lost in translation again.

I love words. I love the meaning behind them. I love stories, and I love people. I love telling people’s stories in a meaningful, persuasive, and transformative way. If you, your brand, or your client have a story to tell to an audience that doesn’t speak your language, I will tell that story for you fully, in your own voice, and preserving your vision.  Let’s tell your story together!
